"Life isn't meant to be stagnant—I was born to stand in the spotlight!" On September 1st in Ji'an City, Jiangxi Province, Liu Chaolong, returning home with honors, spoke to reporters with eyes ablaze.
Just two weeks earlier, this post-90s athlete from Xingqiao Town, Ji'an City, had claimed six gold medals at the 2025 UJR World Jump Rope Open Championship and World Cup. Surprisingly, this world-renowned jump rope champion was once an ordinary forklift driver. It was his persistence and passion that propelled him from construction sites onto the international stage.

A Beam of Light Illuminates the Lonely Training Ground

Liu Chaolong practiced jump rope even while working as a forklift operator.
Liu Chaolong's journey with jump rope began in childhood. In elementary school, he represented his school at district competitions and showed early promise. By middle school, he dominated every school jump rope contest, consistently finishing in first place. Each podium experience quietly planted the seed of belief: "I can master this."
After graduation, like many ordinary individuals, Liu Chao Long went out to work. However, he found himself as a forklift driver, a job unrelated to his education or talents. At one point, feeling lost, he thought his life had reached a dead end.
Fortunately, his passion for jump rope remained. After work, he rekindled his interest and committed to daily practice. Exceptional physical fitness was essential to establish himself in the sport. Having graduated from a sports school, his stamina was already solid. To further strengthen it, Liu Chaolong—working as a forklift operator in Zhejiang Province in 2012—would run 10 kilometers every morning at seven sharp to reach the construction site's mixing plant. After work, he dedicated his free time to practicing jump rope.
With no dedicated space, construction sites, rooftops, and roads became his training grounds. When night fell, he would turn on his bulldozer's headlights, bathing himself in their glow. "The construction site is pitch-black at night. For miles around, I might be the only soul there. But when that beam of light hits me—it's like a spotlight on stage, shining just for me." The rope often snapped on the gravel and sand, so he would cauterize the frayed ends with a lighter and stick them back together to keep jumping. "As long as I can train, none of that matters."
From Amateur to National Champion

In 2014, Liu Chaolong won the national jump rope championship.
His persistence with jump rope initially stemmed from pure passion. That changed in late 2012 when Liu Chaolong stumbled upon videos of jump rope competitions online. For the first time, he realized jump rope wasn't just a schoolyard game—it had professional, national-level competitions. "Back then, jump rope enthusiasts had a QQ group chat where people shared training videos. Watching fancy jump rope for the first time, those fluid techniques and blazing speeds instantly hooked me."
Joining the enthusiasts' group opened a new world for Liu Chaolong. He scoured the group's competition archives and noted the national champions' records: "Knowing how many jumps the top performer could achieve gave me a goal. From that day on, I began experimenting with training methods, gradually moving toward professionalism."
In 2014, he made a bold decision: to quit his job as a forklift operator and dedicate himself fully to jump rope. His family strongly opposed this choice. "Jump rope is a kid's game—what future could it possibly hold?" Only his grandfather said, "If you like it, go for it."
The path to his dream was far from smooth. He practiced alone on construction sites, accompanied only by the light from his forklift and his own shadow... but he never backed down. He even treated his jump rope as a "comrade-in-arms," wiping it clean after every session and placing it beside his pillow.
In 2014, Liu Chaolong finally claimed multiple first-place finishes at the National Jump Rope League, achieving 206 single-rope jumps in 30 seconds and becoming a top national. He then went on to win numerous national championships and even appeared on CCTV. In 2017, his father traveled to Fujian Province to watch him train, finally understanding his choice and shifting from opposition to support.
Showcasing China's Speed to the World

Today, Liu Chaolong has become a "calling card" for Chinese jump rope.
On the international stage, Liu takes particular pride not only in his trophies, but also in the praise he receives from foreign jumpers. "They come up to me, give me a thumbs-up, and smile, saying 'Chinese speed is very good!'" This recognition from abroad makes him realize his training is not just for personal dreams—it carries the responsibility of showcasing China's athletic prowess.
At the 2025 UJR World Jump Rope Open Championships, he delivered a stunning performance, winning gold in all six events: the 30-second single-rope speed jump, the 2×30-second double-rope relay, 4×30-second single-rope relay, the 4-person synchronized freestyle, the continuous triple-rope jump, and the 90-second single-rope speed jump. His 360 consecutive triple-unders and 514 single-under jumps in 90 seconds completely redefined the perceived limits of jump rope performance.
On August 16, as he stood on the world podium and watched his national flag rise, Liu Chaolong felt immense pride: "I believe I can match any athlete from any country. Through my achievements, I want to show the world that China possesses formidable talent in the field of jump rope!"
Today, he is not only an athlete but also a coach. He trains students, leads teams, and grows alongside them. "Interest is the best teacher. Seeing them love jump rope is like seeing myself back then."
"I want to advance this sport, showing more people that jump rope isn't just for fitness—it can take you to the world stage." From a rural child to a forklift driver to a world champion, Liu Chaolong has used a single jump rope to leap into a vast life of his own making.
"Many believe a 'proper life' follows one template: a stable job, sticking to the script. But I say life shouldn't be static—everyone has the right to chase their dreams." As the interview concluded, he picked up his jump rope. With a flick of his wrist, the rope traced arcs through the air, swift as lightning. Today, Liu Chaolong's greatest wish is to make jump rope a signature sport in his hometown of Ji'an City and contribute to building China into a leading sporting nation. The rope that once guided him through darkness continues to dance through the air—because passion drives success.
